Motor Theft – What trends should you beware of in 2019?

Throughout the UK, vehicle theft is on the rise. In conjunction with traditional theft, there’s a heightened trend towards criminals taking advantage of ‘keyless’ cars.

What is keyless theft?

New vehicles with keyless entry systems, which have replaced traditional car keys with a contactless fob are at the highest threat, as thieves do not need to have access to the fob itself. Instead, they can use a signal receiver to pick up the radio waves, then beam them to a receiver near the car and activate the signal from the receiver. This allows a copy of the fob which is close enough car to unlock the vehicle and start the engine.

Protection against keyless thefts:

1. Ensure that you have the correct insurance policy for your vehicle.

2. At night switch of keyless fobs and speak to your car dealer about software upgrades to ensure that your fob has the most up to date security standards.

3. Make sure keys are kept far away from front doors.

4. Invest in shielding device for fobs i.e. a Faraday Bag.

The rise of traditional theft

More traditional forms of theft have also been on the rise and affect both new as well as older cars and rely on forced entry to break into the vehicle. In recent years there has been an increase in the number of van owners that are reporting ‘peel and steal’ claims. ‘Pealing and stealing’ is where the side walls or the door of a van are hacked away using a cutting device, which then grants access to the van.

How to protect yourself against traditional theft:

1. Once again assure that you have the correct cover for your car and/or van.

2. Remove anything valuable from your vehicle even if you are leaving it unattended for just a short period of time.

3. Keep your vehicles locked in a garage or in a well-lit residential area.
